802.11 (Wi-Fi)
O 802.11 se refere a uma família de especificações que definem o formato das comunicações entre dispositivos sem fio. Desenvolvidas nos EUA pelo Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), essas normas têm diversas especificações.
O 802.11 aplica-se a redes locais sem fio com transmissões de 1 ou 2 Mbps na faixa de 2,4 GHz. O 802.11a é uma evolução do 802.11 e também se aplica a redes locais sem fio, mas transmite a até 54 Mbps, na freqüência de 5 GHz. A versão 802.11b, também conhecida como Wi-Fi, transmite até 11 Mbps na faixa de 2,4 GHz, foi ratificada em 1999, e possui desempenho similar ao padrão Ethernet, mas em redes sem fio. É bastante utilizada atualmente. O 802.11g se aplica a redes LAN sem fio e pode chegar a mais de 20 Mbps operando na faixa de 2.4GHz.
Utilizando o padrão Wi-Fi, que é o mais comum atualmente, equipamentos, como os smartphones, podem acessar redes privadas, como a rede interna da empresa, ou públicas (com hotspots), como as disponibilizadas em aeroportos, hotéis, dentre outros locais, e dessa forma ter acesso à Internet ou outras informações na rede acessada.
